Shivan perwer is the foremost singer among the kurds today. Acharismatic and contraversial figure he continues to thrill audiences with his breathtakingly beautiful voice, poweful emotion and hypnotic rhythms.
Such is the power of this musician that in Iran , Iraq and Turky his music was lang banned, for he sang in Kurdish, and his tapes only a few of his recordings are permitted in Turky, his once forbidden traditional love songs.Shivan´s music and his richly diverse repertoire, captures the very essence of the Kurdish soul, emcompassing every shade of emotional and spiritual experience, from the exhuberant joy of a Kurdish dance to the tales of lost love and the lament for an emprisoned nation to a celebration of the beuty of the mountains, of its rugged nature and of the history and tradions of a proud and ancient peoples.
Shivan comes out of the ancient tradition of dengbej or bards, storytellers who would travel from town to village to emcampment singing epic tales of wars and romantic love and stories of religious and national heroes some of which date back to the time of Alexander the great. Each feudal lord would have his own dengbej and many were the competitions between dengbej set up to see who was the greatest composer and performer.
Shivan was born in the region of Urfa, Kurdistan(Turky) into a family of musicians in which everyone sang or played an instrument. His earlist memories are of long tragic tales of loss and longing, always with the desire to be free, to live in a land free from persecution. His earlist wish was to be the best dengbej and already as a child composing his own songs he was singled out for his remarkable voice.
He rose to fame rapidly in 1972 at Ankara University at the time of the Kurdish uprising in the Iraqi controlled part of Kurdistan. Pirate tapes made on simple equipment were smuggeled into Iraq and to Iran on pain of death Thousands listend to his tapes thousands cam to hear him sing live. In 1976 he had to escape Turky fearing for his and his families lives and that is when in Germany he made his first record.
